exploring the Cornwall theme in textiles - Jo McIntosh

Today we are very pleased to share work from another of our newest members.  For our Cornwall theme this year, Jo McIntosh has been researching and taking her inspiration from Crysede, originally a small silk printing company in the textiles industry which began life in Newlyn, with several outlets opening up around Cornwall and the South West.  Eventually the company moved to The Island in St. Ives, where designs were transferred to silk using the block printing method.

Jo has been interested in the St. Ives Textiles industry, Crysede, for some time and she has enjoyed researching the company history, the designs and designers and the method of block printing used to transfer the repeat designs to silk (which would be then be left hanging to dry in the fishing net lofts).

In her sketchbook, Jo has been exploring some of the designs in more detail, in particular one of the earliest designs by Patrick Heron (when he was aged 14 years).  Using a viewer and taking elements of the designs, small collages and drawings can be taken and made into printing blocks and stencils.

Looking at some of the Crysede designs on silk from the turn of the century, Jo has been experimenting with different types of paint and dye and different methods of transferring and printing her own designs onto different types of fabric using her own interpretation of symbols she associates with Cornwall and St. Ives in particular.  Jo's fun and colourful designs include cats inspired by a Patrick Heron design and also her love of the famous nursery rhyme "as I was going to St. Ives", Cornish cottages and fish ...

Jo is making her designs into a variety of products and her sketchbook will be available to view, if you would like to come along to our show in September
